Referred to as the “Winter Home Of Badrivishal”, the Narsingh Devta Temple in Joshimath is dedicated to the fourth avatar of the Lord Vishnu which is in the form of half man and half lion. The temple has been a pilgrimage site for centuries and is believed that the idol of the Narasimha avatar was installed by Adi Shankaracharya himself with his own hands. The temple is renowned for its unique architecture which combines aspects of both North Indian and South Indian temple styles.

The temple is located in the foothills of the Himalayas, surrounded by dense forests and snow-capped peaks and is said to be one of the most scenic locations in India. The Joshimath Temple has located just 0.5km from the Joshimath Bus Stand and is famous for its history. 

History of Narsingh Devta Temple, Joshimath

The history of the Joshimath Temple dates back to the 8th century, when Adi Shankaracharya, one of the greatest Hindu philosophers, established the temple as a part of his mission to spread the message of Vedanta throughout India. It is believed that he installed the idol of Narsingh Devta with his own hands in the temple and since then it has been a pilgrimage hub for centuries. As per some beliefs, it is been said that the right hand in the idol installed by Shankaracharya is getting thinner and when the day it breaks, Badrinath will vanish from the temple and the black stone Shaligram will appear. Now at the present time, when the Badrinath Temple gets covered in snow, the idols are brought down to the Narsingha Temple and are worshipped here for 6 months.

Architecture of Narsingh Devta Temple, Joshimath

The architecture of Joshimath Temple is remarkable. It is built in the Nagara style of architecture, with a large central dome and a number of smaller domes and turrets. The main temple is made of grey granite and has intricate carvings on its walls. The mandapa and the garbha griha are also beautifully carved, and the temple has beautiful sculptures of various gods and goddesses. The temple complex also features a number of other shrines dedicated to various Hindu gods and goddesses, such as Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Durga. Best time to visit Narsingh Devta Temple, Joshimath

April to November is the best time to visit Joshimath. In the winter season, the weather is cold and the town experiences heavy snowfall. It is not good to visit during monsoon season as it may cause landslides to happen.
