History of Corjuem Fort, Goa<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bammons of Sancoale were the original owners of the island. However, in the late 1600s, it was raided by the Marathas, who gave all the control of the island to Sawant-Bhonsle of Sawantwadi. Later on, control of the island was shifted to the Portuguese under the act of Portuguese Viceroy Caetano de Mello e Castro. That is what led to this amazing fortress built-in 1705 for defensive purposes against the Marathas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 18th century, the Portuguese finally protected the Fortress and got free from the Bhonsle\u2019s and the Ranes. After that, the Fortress was used as a military school.
